Along the Oberwaal

Panoramic hike from Burgeis to Mals

Indispensable for hiking fans: a hike along one of the typical Val Venosta irrigation channels. The irrigation channels are the lifelines of the Vinschgau Valley with its low rainfall. The water channels with their narrow maintenance bridges channel the valuable water into the fields and meadows. Farmers were already building the irrigation channels before the 13th century. Today, around 400 hectares of land on the Malser Haide between Mals, Burgeis and St. Valentin are still traditionally irrigated via four irrigation channels. In 2023, this centuries-old technique was added to the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

A leisurely Waalweg hike takes you along the historic Oberwaal irrigation channel from Burgeis to Mals. The Waalweg hike starts in Burgeis at the church of St. Michael, leads along the Sonnensteig trail over the Malser Haide, through the forest to the Solis snack station and then down to Mals. A wonderful view over the Malser Haide accompanies you on the hike.
