Sacred places of peace and strength

Monasteries, churches and chapels around Malles/Mals

You can see the bright white Benedictine monastery of Marienberg above Burgeis from afar. The monastery has been the spiritual and cultural center of the region since 1096. A visit to the highest Benedictine abbey in Europe will immerse you in meditative silence. Guided tours take you to the crypt, the library and the display depot with its collection of historical teaching aids. In the “ora et labora” museum, you can gain an insight into everyday life behind the monastery walls and monastic life according to the Rule of St. Benedict.

The mystical St. Benedict’s Church is also just a few steps away. The little church from the 8th century is one of the oldest churches in Europe and is painted with unique historical frescoes. Also worth a visit is the Romanesque church of St. Vitus on the Tartscher Bühel, which was built on an ancient place of worship. Even today, the people of Tartsch still practise disc breaking here, an archaic ritual to drive out the winter.
